Second to Asia, Africa is the second most populated continent in the world. It is also second largest when it comes to land mass covering over six percent of the world's total surface area. There are sixty one recognised countries comprising of over an estimated nine hundred million inhabitants. It is surrounded by water. The Indian Ocean is located to the Southeast. Northeast is the Red Sea and Suez Canal. The Atlantic Ocean is the West and the Mediterranean to the North. It is widely regarded as the birth place of human life. It lay on the equator and is recognised as the only continent to be both North and South of the Equator. The name Africa dates back to Roman times. Afri was a colloquial term for the indigenous population of people dwelling from or near to Carthage. Ca relates was roman for Country or land. The Greek word aphrike means without cold which derived from the word Phrike, which means cold and horrible. Prefixed with 'A' means 'without cold or horror'.
